Tradie and Friends Turn Picnic Table into a Weekend Cruiser

2 min read

A group of mates has captured the internet’s attention after transforming everyday items into a makeshift boat for weekend adventures. The “picnic boat,” built from a picnic table, large olive oil drums, and an Esky, has become a viral hit as footage shows Kurt, 34, and his friends cruising down the Swan River in Perth and along the coast.

Kurt, who chose to share only his first name, explained that the idea started as a joke. But when one of his friends bought a bunch of olive oil barrels on Facebook Marketplace and suggested turning their dream into reality, the group decided to give it a shot.

“It only took about five hours in the end,” Kurt told a media outlet. “It’s basically a picnic table fastened to the olive barrels  they’re used as floats. We made sure the back end was strong enough to hold all the weight and clamped on a small engine.”

Footage of the vessel in action shows Kurt and his five mates heading out on the water, with lifejackets strapped underneath and an Esky built into the boat for drinks. “Carlton Drys were pretty popular, so it was an all-round decision to enjoy a few,” Kurt joked.

He added that the crew had plenty of memorable moments. “It’s not every day you see a bunch of lads floating down the river on a picnic table. Plenty of people on the water got a good laugh,” he said.

While the group enjoyed the “picnic boat” on several occasions, Kurt admitted it’s now “pretty destroyed” and has been retired for years. The footage, shot over six years ago, only recently went online as Kurt has started building other whacky inventions, with the boat inspiring his creative spark.
