Toxic Liquor Tragedy in Kuwait: 23 Dead, 67 Arrested

1 min read

A deadly wave of alcohol poisoning has shaken Kuwait, claiming the lives of at least 23 people and hospitalizing dozens more. In response, authorities have arrested 67 individuals linked to the production and distribution of locally brewed toxic liquor. Among those detained is a Bangladeshi national believed to be the leader of an organized crime syndicate behind the operation.

Security forces raided six active and four makeshift factories operating in residential and industrial zones. Investigators learned from a Nepali suspect how methanol a highly toxic substance was being mixed into the illicit brews.

Alcohol production and importation are strictly prohibited in Kuwait. Yet, underground operations continue to thrive, often ignoring basic health and safety standards. The result: a public health disaster. Officials confirmed that 160 people were affected by methanol poisoning, with the majority of victims being Asian expatriates.

Medical teams have scrambled to respond. At least 51 patients required emergency kidney dialysis, while 31 others were placed on ventilators. The crisis has hit the migrant community particularly hard, with nearly 40 Indian nationals hospitalized in recent days.
