A series of devastating tornadoes swept through several states in the US Midwest and Southeast on Saturday night, resulting in at least 33 fatalities, according to CNN.
Missouri was particularly hard-hit, reporting 12 deaths across five counties, as confirmed by the state’s highway patrol on social media. Robbie Myers, director of emergency management in Butler County, detailed the destruction, noting that over 500 homes, a church, and a grocery store were obliterated. He described a mobile home park as having been “destroyed.”
In Mississippi, Governor Tate Reeves reported six deaths: one in Covington County, two in Jeff Davis County, and three in Walthall County. Preliminary assessments indicate that 29 individuals were injured statewide, with storm damage affecting 21 counties.
Arkansas also suffered three fatalities, as reported by the state’s Department of Emergency Management, which noted an additional 32 injuries.
Meteorologist David Roth from the National Weather Service’s Weather Prediction Center indicated that 26 tornadoes were reported, although not all were confirmed to have touched down. These storms were driven by a low-pressure system that unleashed powerful thunderstorms across parts of Arkansas, Illinois, Mississippi, and Missouri late Friday night into Saturday.
The tragic toll of the storm has prompted emergency responses across the affected areas, as communities begin to assess the extensive damage and provide support to those impacted.
