Fashion designer and author Tina Knowles has opened up about a deeply personal moment she shared with her daughters, Beyoncé and Solange, before undergoing surgery last year following a stage 1 breast cancer diagnosis.
Speaking at the 27th Annual Angel Ball in New York City, the 71-year-old reflected on her journey, which she also details in her memoir Matriarch, released in April. Knowles revealed that after doctors discovered cancer in her left breast last July, her family rallied around her with unwavering support.
“Right before I was wheeled in to get the surgery, my girls sang a gospel song, Walk With Me, which I absolutely love,” Knowles said, recalling how the performance lifted her spirits. She added that her daughters even had her laughing as they joked about the viral “demure” TikTok trend, helping her head into surgery feeling “blessed” and reassured.
In Matriarch, Knowles described how Beyoncé stayed positive and immediately focused on the diagnosis as a challenge to be tackled with precision, while Solange reassured her: “Mom, we are going to take care of this.” She also credited her “bonus daughters,” Kelly Rowland and niece Angie Beyince, for standing by her side.
“My girls became my team,” she wrote, emphasizing how their love and encouragement gave her strength. “I went in there laughing and feeling so blessed, like everything was going to be okay. And it was.”
