TIB Criticizes Interim Government’s Response to Mob Violence Amid Political Turmoil

The recent surge of mob violence in Bangladesh has drawn sharp criticism from the Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB), which claims that both ousted Premier Sheikh Hasina and the interim government share responsibility for the unrest. In a statement released on Friday, TIB accused Hasina and her foreign allies of inciting public outrage through conspiratorial rhetoric, while also condemning the interim administration for its “grave indifference” in preventing chaos despite prior warnings.

TIB acknowledged the commitment of the administration led by Professor Muhammad Yunus to restore order following 16 years of what they termed authoritarian rule. However, the watchdog raised concerns about the government’s readiness to implement effective and precautionary measures during security emergencies.

Since violence erupted in Dhanmondi-32 on Wednesday night, the government’s response has been criticized as passive, characterized by a reluctance to accept responsibility for the breakdown in law and order. TIB urged the government to tackle such crises with decisive and lawful actions rather than issuing vague statements.

The organization warned that ongoing mob violence could inadvertently empower pro-fascist elements within the Awami League, undermining efforts to project a stable and progressive image of a “new Bangladesh” to the international community. This, they argue, could jeopardize the prospects for good governance and national stability.

TIB emphasized the necessity of holding Sheikh Hasina and her allies accountable, advocating for exemplary punishment while ensuring adherence to both domestic and international legal standards. As the situation unfolds, the call for responsible governance and accountability remains paramount in the pursuit of lasting peace and stability in the nation.
