Thousands Rally in Comilla Demanding Division Status

Thousands of people took to the streets of Comilla on Friday, October 10, demanding that the government officially declare Comilla as a new administrative division. Protesters and speakers at the rally warned that the movement would continue until the demand for “Comilla Division” is fulfilled.

The demonstration began around 3 p.m. at Kandirpar Pubali Square, the heart of Comilla city, where residents from 17 upazilas of the district gathered. Participants carried banners and chanted slogans in support of the demand, emphasizing that Comilla’s historical and administrative significance justifies its elevation to divisional status.

The rally was organized by the Greater Comilla Content Creator Association, with its president Tipu Chowdhury presiding over the event. Leaders from various political, social, and cultural organizations also addressed the crowd, voicing strong support for the cause.

Speakers highlighted that Comilla was once the capital of the ancient Samataṭa region and carries a heritage spanning thousands of years. They argued that despite being on the verge of recognition as a division, “conspiracies” have repeatedly stalled the process. They further pointed out that 42 regional offices of different government departments serving six districts of Greater Comilla are already based in the city, proving the administrative logic for creating a division.

The demand was also tied to identity and pride. Protesters insisted that the division must be declared under the name “Comilla”, not any alternative. They added that even if some districts choose not to be included, a Comilla Division could still be formed with the willing districts.

As the rally continued into the late afternoon, speakers reiterated that the people of Comilla would remain on the streets until their demand is met. The gathering reflected both the long-standing aspirations of Comilla residents and the growing pressure on the government to finalize its decision on new administrative divisions.
