Thousands Feel Magnitude 4.4 Earthquake as Tremor Shakes Boorowa and Beyond

A magnitude 4.4 earthquake has rattled southern New South Wales, with more than 5,900 people reporting they felt the tremor after it struck near Boorowa just after 7pm on Wednesday.

Geoscience Australia recorded the quake at a depth of 11 kilometres, with reports coming in from across Central NSW and as far away as Sydney, Wollongong and Canberra.

Seismology Research Centre chief scientist Adam Pascale said quakes of this size are not unusual for the region.
“It’s a pretty active area in that region,” he noted.

Residents in Boorowa about 90 minutes from Canberra described the shaking as a short, sharp jolt that lasted only a few seconds. One local said the tremor felt “strong but brief,” enough to startle but not long enough to cause panic.

Authorities have not reported any damage or injuries, but monitoring continues as aftershocks remain possible.
