The presence of Bangladeshis in Sydney’s political landscape is steadily increasing, as evidenced by recent electoral changes. Against this backdrop, the Liberal Party hosted a vibrant iftar event, gathering Bangladeshi leaders to celebrate unity and community.

On March 20, 2025, the Lakemba branch of the New South Wales Liberal Party held an iftar and dinner at the La Castellé venue in Bankstown. The primary aim of the event was to bring together members from diverse communities, fostering friendship and Islamic values.

Guests were welcomed at 6 PM, and the program commenced at 6:30 PM, hosted by former councillor Barbel Aburat. The evening began with a touching recitation from the holy Quran by Sayen Yasar Zaman, followed by the Australian national anthem.

After screening a documentary highlighting the activities of the Lakemba branch, bouquets were presented to 15 councillors in attendance. Notable guests included the Leader of the Opposition in New South Wales, the Honorable Mark Speakman SC, MP.

Mohammad Zaman, president of the Lakemba branch, warmly welcomed the attendees with an engaging speech. Following him, Mark Speakman addressed the crowd, and Islamic scholar and imam Sheikh Sonar Churhalo spoke about the significance of Ramadan and the role of business in Islam before the iftar.

Additional speeches were delivered by Chris Stone, Director of State Affairs, the Honorable David Coleman MP, the Honorable Senator Maria Kovacic, and other prominent leaders. At the conclusion of the speeches, guests presented a bouquet to Wilson Chehene, the Liberal Party’s Manager of Party Affairs.

Councillor George Zakia recognized four members of the Lakemba branch for their hard work and dedication. Former councillor Sajida Akhtar Sanjida received a commemorative crest for her contributions to social issues and women’s empowerment.

This iftar event marks an important chapter in the history of the Liberal Party.
