Across the globe, the reign of soft drinks continues unabated. Coca-Cola, a name synonymous with refreshment, is beloved by people of all ages—from children to the elderly. Every day, billions of liters are sold worldwide. Yet, behind its delightful taste lies a startling truth.
A recent study by Professor Luis Alberto Zamora and his team from the University of Michigan’s Department of Food and Nutrition reveals concerning findings about our lifespan. Published in an international scientific journal, the study claims that each bottle or can of Coke can shave at least 12 minutes off our lives.
It’s not just Coke under scrutiny. Professor Zamora has compiled a list of foods that reduce lifespan, based on research of over 5,800 food and drink items in the U.S. Fast foods and processed items are in the spotlight. For instance, a hot dog can reduce life expectancy by 36 minutes, with Coke adding another 12. Cheeseburgers and bacon slices each subtract 9 minutes from our lives.
These popular fast-food items are laden with processed ingredients. Excessive calories, sugar, and salt contribute to a shrinking lifespan. However, Professor Zamora also highlights healthier options. Fruits, vegetables, peanut butter, and homemade jam sandwiches can enhance longevity.
The research indicates that individuals who consume meat daily could extend their lifespan by at least 48 minutes if they derive 10% of their calories from fruits and vegetables. Dr. Oliver Joliet, a member of Zamora’s team, emphasizes that dietary habits in the U.S. significantly impact life expectancy, with 75% of daily meat consumption being processed.
Dr. Joliet states, “Our study was small-scale. Larger studies could uncover more insights. However, to live healthier and longer, dietary changes are essential.”
This research offers a new perspective. Altering our eating habits could be the key to a healthier, longer life.
