Tensions Rise as Hizb ut-Tahrir March Faces Police Clash in Dhaka

In a bold display of defiance, the banned organization Hizb ut-Tahrir staged a march in the Baitul Mukarram area of the capital, Dhaka, on March 7. Following Friday prayers, the procession took off, making its way from Paltan towards Bijoynagar. For approximately 15 minutes, the march proceeded without incident until it encountered police resistance.

As the group advanced, law enforcement intervened, deploying tear gas and sound grenades, which led to a swift dispersal of the protesters. However, the members regrouped and attempted to resume their march, only to be met with further rounds of tear gas from the security forces. Reports indicate that some participants retaliated by throwing bricks and stones.

Hizb ut-Tahrir, a designated terrorist organization, operates under stringent legal restrictions. According to the Anti-Terrorism Act of 2009, any activities associated with banned groups, including gatherings, marches, and distribution of materials, are considered criminal offenses.

In a surprising turn, Asif Mahmud Bhuiyan, the youth and sports advisor, intervened to secure the release of an individual detained during the clashes. The events underscore the growing tensions surrounding the organization’s activities and the government’s firm stance against perceived threats to public order.
