Security forces have taken a firm stance outside the National Board of Revenue (NBR) headquarters in the capital, with members of the army and police stationed in front of the building on Saturday morning. The deployment comes amid escalating tensions and ongoing protests by NBR officials demanding reforms.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing security personnel positioned on the NBR premises as the situation intensified. An NBR official confirmed that the forces had been deployed following instructions from the Home Affairs Adviser, aiming to maintain order during a volatile period.
“The NBR chairman is expected to be present today, as government, semi-government offices, banks, schools, and colleges are open according to government directives. To prevent any untoward incidents, the army and police have been deployed,” the official explained.
The NBR Reform Unity Council, which has been leading the protests, announced a series of new programs on Wednesday, including a campaign of continuous non-cooperation with the NBR chairman to press their demands. As part of these efforts, NBR officials gathered at the headquarters displaying placards, and a sit-in was staged at the NBR and its offices across Dhaka and surrounding areas, excluding export and international passenger services.
A nationwide strike has also been called for May 24 and 25, involving all offices of the Tax, Customs, and VAT Department. The strike will run from 9 am to 5 pm at the Customs House and LC Stations, with export and international passenger services remaining operational during this period. The protest actions reflect mounting dissent within the revenue department as officials seek reforms amid the ongoing unrest.
