Teenagers Ride at 120kph on E-Bike on Gold Coast: No Charges Yet

1 min read

Police on the Gold Coast have revealed they tracked two teenagers riding an electric dirt bike at speeds reaching 120 kilometers per hour, though neither has been formally charged. The incident occurred early Saturday morning on Sundale Bridge in Southport, where the boys, aged 16 and 17, were allegedly seen performing wheel-stands and riding erratically.

The police helicopter was overhead during the pursuit, which did not result in an immediate stop. The officers waited until the bike’s battery was depleted before moving in to intercept the riders. Despite the dangerous riding behavior, no arrests have been made, and investigations remain ongoing.

A Queensland police spokesperson confirmed that no formal charges have been laid against either teenager at this stage. “Officers continue to review all available vision to establish who committed the alleged offences,” the spokesperson said in a statement.

Gold Coast police officer Jason Tuffley emphasized that the type of bike used by the teenagers cannot be registered, highlighting concerns about unregistered or illegal vehicles being operated in public spaces. The incident raises questions about youth engagement with high-powered e-bikes and the potential safety risks involved. Authorities are currently examining footage and gathering evidence to determine the next steps in the case.
