Tasmania Braces for Destructive Winds as Cold Front Sweeps Across State

1 min read

Tasmanians are being warned to prepare for destructive wind gusts of up to 125 kilometers per hour as a powerful cold front move across the state on Friday.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) said the system is expected to bring widespread damaging winds, showers, and thunderstorms, with the strongest gusts likely along the north and west coasts. Areas at risk include Devonport, Burnie, Launceston, St Helens, Swansea, Strahan, New Norfolk, and Hobart.

Residents in affected regions are being urged to secure loose outdoor items and take precautions around their homes. Authorities have also reminded the public to stay alert for falling trees and potential power outages.

Meanwhile, minor flood warnings remain in place for the Meander and North Esk Rivers as well as the River Derwent, with saturated soils increasing the risk of localised flooding.

The BoM said conditions are expected to ease gradually into Friday evening, though gusty winds will persist into the weekend.
