T20 WC 2024: Formats, groups and Super 8 stage explained

The ODI World Cup 2023 has just finished. But another ICC event is lined up for the next year in the form of 2024 ICC T20 World Cup, scheduled in June, 2024.

The T20 World Cup 2024 will come up with a new format, giving a chance to as many as 20 teams to compete in the tournament.

The Africa Qualifier concluded on Thursday as Namibia and Uganda qualified for the upcoming T20 World Cup from the region.

It also brought an end to the qualifying round, meaning we now have the names of all 20 teams, who will feature in the competition, scheduled to be hosted by the West Indies and the USA in 2024.

The top eight teams from the T20 World Cup 2022 – England, Pakistan, India, New Zealand, South Africa, Australia, Sri Lanka ​​​​​​and the Netherlands, along with the two host nations, the West Indies and the USA, gained automatic qualification for the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Afghanistan and Bangladesh have also earned a spot as they were the next best ranked unqualified teams as of November 14, 2022. Eight more sides, Scotland, Ireland, Papua New Guinea, Nepal, Oman, Canada, Namibia and Uganda, have gained entries into the tournament, due to their performance in the regional qualifiers.

The 20 teams that qualified for the 2024 T20 World Cup will be divided into four groups. Each group will have five teams each.

The teams will play each other once and at the end of it, the top two sides from each group will qualify for the next round, known as the Super 8.
