Sylhet-Sunamganj Bus Services Suspended Amid Indefinite Strike Over Student-Bus Worker Clash

1 min read

Bus services on the Sylhet-Sunamganj route have been suspended as an indefinite strike began following a scuffle between students of Sunamganj Science and Technology University (SSTU) and a bus employee over fare disputes on Sunday.

Sources reported that some university students boarded a bus from Sunamganj town to their temporary campus in Shantiganj. An argument over fares quickly escalated into a physical altercation between the students and transport workers.

Transport workers claimed that the students vandalized the bus and assaulted the driver and helper. In response, the workers blocked the Sylhet-Sunamganj highway for two hours in the afternoon, disrupting traffic in both directions.

Although police intervened to end the blockade by 5 pm, the transport workers announced they would continue the strike indefinitely starting Monday, demanding justice for the incident.

Ali Akbar Rajon, joint general secretary of the Sylhet District Bus and Minibus Workers’ Union, clarified that only buses operating on the Sylhet-Sunamganj route are affected, not the wider region. He confirmed that the strike will persist until their demands are addressed.
