Sydney Trains Set to Roll for New Year’s Eve: Government and Unions Strike Deal

2 min read

In a breakthrough that promises a seamless New Year’s Eve celebration in Sydney, the NSW government and rail unions have reached an agreement ensuring train services will operate without disruption. The resolution emerged smoothly from a Fair Work Commission hearing, with both parties committed to safeguarding the festivities.

Despite earlier tensions, the rail unions were proactive in adjusting their planned industrial actions, ensuring that Sydney’s iconic fireworks display could proceed unimpeded. This cooperative spirit led the state government to withdraw its applications to the industrial relations tribunal.

Transport Minister Jo Haylen confidently announced that train services would “run as planned” throughout the holiday period, providing a much-needed assurance to the public. “We’ve been given undertakings by the rail union that there will be no disruption,” she stated.

Tony Warnes, NSW RTBU secretary, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the union’s readiness to negotiate further. He urged the government to resume talks on Boxing Day, aiming for a comprehensive agreement before the year ends.

The resolution not only secures safe travel for New Year’s revelers but also protects the upcoming Sydney Test and holiday events from potential disruptions. Minister Haylen expressed relief, highlighting the importance of maintaining public confidence during the festive season.

As discussions continue, the commitment from both sides marks a promising step towards lasting industrial harmony, ensuring that Sydney’s celebrations proceed without a hitch.
