Actress Sydney Sweeney has revealed the intense training and lifestyle changes she undertook to portray legendary boxer Christy Martin in the upcoming biopic Christy.
Speaking during a Q&A at the Hamptons International Film Festival, the 28-year-old star described her grueling daily routine: “Every morning I would weight train for an hour, then I would go and do boxing for three hours, and then another hour of weight training at night.” She added that while she tries not to bring her own life into her characters, she “learned so much from Christy” that she applied to herself.
Determined to capture Martin’s story authentically, Sweeney refused to use a stunt double for the fight sequences. “Every single fight you see, we are actually punching each other. We are going full force. I always believed that you would not be able to make it feel real if it’s a stunt double or if it’s faking the hits,” she explained.
Christy Martin rose to fame in the 1990s as the most recognized female boxer in the United States. Her career was marked not only by her success in the ring but also by personal tragedy, including surviving an attempted murder by her abusive husband James Martin in 2010. Sweeney said she was shocked that Martin’s story had not been told on a “global” scale until now.
