The Shyama Puja and Diwali festival, the second largest celebration for the Hindu community, was recently brought to life in Sydney by the Nrityanjali Dance Academy.

On November 1st, a vibrant ceremony was hosted at 108 Lakemba Street, showcasing the Academy’s dedication to this celebration, led by its founder, Mousumi Saha, who has championed this event for over 20 years alongside Sydney’s progressive Bengali community.

The festivities commenced at 6 p.m., with priest Basab Roy overseeing the rituals. A captivating cultural program, directed by Dr. Ratan Kundu, included musical performances by Sushmita Dhar and Sonali Das, while Faizunnahar Polly and Nusrat Jahan Smriti enchanted the audience with poetry recitations. Dance performances, led by Mousumi Saha and fellow academy artists, added to the cultural splendor.

The event saw over a hundred attendees, including members of Sydney’s various social and cultural organizations. Highlights included traditional offerings, ceremonial lamp-lighting, and a lively fireworks display for the children. Closing the night, Mousumi and Rajesh Saha expressed heartfelt thanks to the audience, promising to continue this rich cultural tradition in the future.
