Sydney may soon welcome a second film studio as part of a multi-million-dollar government investment to bolster the local screen industry. The New South Wales government has announced a plan to allocate 380 million dollars in its upcoming budget on June 24, focusing on both film and digital gaming sectors. New legislation set to take effect next month aims to further strengthen these industries.
A key part of this funding includes 100 million dollars dedicated to finding a site for a new film studio in Sydney. The goal is to partner with industry stakeholders and private sector players to select the best location. Currently, the only major studio in the state is at Moore Park, operated by Disney Studios Australia, which has hosted productions like Mad Max Furiosa, The Fall Guy, and I Know What You Did Last Summer.
Minister for the Arts John Graham highlighted the thriving nature of the state’s screen sector. He noted that the existing Disney studio is often at full capacity due to high demand and emphasized that the new investment aims to grow the industry further. When asked about potential locations for the second studio, he mentioned Oran Park in Sydney’s southwest as one of several suggested sites.
Figures from Screen Australia show that during the 2024 financial year, feature film production in New South Wales accounted for 21 percent of the national total, underscoring the region’s importance to the industry.
The budget also includes government-supported initiatives such as rebates for post-production, digital, visual effects, and digital games. Graham explained that the government’s broader strategy involves making New South Wales an attractive hub for screen production by streamlining processes and reducing red tape. This includes tripling the time allowed for filming on private land without needing a development application and collaborating with local councils to designate more filming hotspots.
Graham emphasized that the government’s goal is to position Australia as a premier location for film production, creating jobs and fostering Australian stories. This long-term approach aims to build a sustainable and competitive screen industry in New South Wales.
