Sweden to Redirect Aid From Five Nations to Boost Support for Ukraine

1 min read

Sweden announced plans to phase out development aid to Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Mozambique, Liberia and Bolivia in the coming years, redirecting funds to strengthen assistance for Ukraine.

Minister for International Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade Benjamin Dousa said Ukraine is now Sweden’s top foreign policy and aid priority. He confirmed the government will raise support to at least 10 billion crowns ($1.06 billion) in 2026, noting that resources must be reallocated since “the money has to come from somewhere.”

The government estimates that more than 2 billion crowns will be freed up over the next two years, which will be diverted to Ukraine for projects such as rebuilding its energy infrastructure.

Since taking office in 2022, Sweden’s current government has already cut aid to more than 10 countries, including Burkina Faso and Mali. Sweden has traditionally been a major donor, with an annual humanitarian aid budget of 56 billion crowns over the past three years. That figure will be reduced to 53 billion crowns annually for 2026-2028, with spending reprioritized to cover costs related to immigration and migrant repatriation.
