Surge in COVID-19 Cases Sparks Caution Ahead of Festive Season in Victoria

Health authorities in Victoria are urging caution as a significant rise in COVID-19 hospitalizations and infections is reported, coinciding with the festive season. The latest COVID-19 surveillance report indicates that hospitalizations have surged by 59 percent from October to November, with the seven-day average reaching 197 by November 26.

In addition to hospitalizations, reported cases have also jumped 44 percent over the past month, prompting officials to call on Victorians to take precautions as summer approaches, especially to protect vulnerable populations.

Chief Health Officer Clare Looker emphasized the importance of simple measures to mitigate the spread of the virus. “If you’re feeling sick, please stay home,” she urged. For those needing to go out or visiting high-risk settings such as aged-care facilities or hospitals, she recommended wearing masks.

Dr. Looker also highlighted the importance of staying current with COVID-19 vaccinations, noting that immunity can diminish over time. As of now, the JN.1 variant is the predominant strain in circulation, with no evidence suggesting that the virus has become more severe.
