A surfer, Giulia Manfrini, died after being impaled by a swordfish in Indonesia. Manfrini, 36, from Turin, Italy, had been surfing in the waters of the Mentawai Islands Regency, West Sumatra Province, before the incident on Friday.

Two witnesses tried to provide first aid to her, but she was later taken to a medical center. James Colston, who set up a travel agency with Manfrini, said that despite the efforts of her partner, local resort staff, and doctors, she couldn’t be saved.

Lahmudin Siregar, acting head of the Mentawai Islands Regency Regional Disaster Management Agency, confirmed that an accident occurred with an Italian citizen while surfing.

Manfrini was the lifeblood of the company and her infectious enthusiasm for surf, snow, and life will be remembered by all who came in contact with her. The mayor of Manfrini’s hometown, Venaria Reale, expressed shock and powerlessness at the news of her death.

Previous research suggests that swordfish attacks are rare but can be dangerous when provoked.
