Supporters of BNP leader Ishraque Hossain staged a demonstration on Wednesday, blocking the Matsya Bhaban intersection and gathering in front of Nagar Bhaban to press for his appointment as mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation. The protest was a response to the government’s silence on an ultimatum issued by his supporters.
At around 11:30 am, thousands of Ishraque’s supporters assembled near the Jamuna entrance at the Kakrail intersection. Despite their presence, police had already sealed off access to the area at least 20 minutes earlier to prevent the rally from escalating.
The movement was coordinated by Moshiur Rahman, a former secretary and the chief organizer of the ongoing protest. He had previously set a deadline of 10:00 am on Wednesday for the interim government to respond to their demands.
On Tuesday afternoon, during the sixth day of their sit-in, Rahman declared that if no decision was made to transfer mayoral responsibilities to Ishraque by the specified time, supporters would regroup at 10:00 am to announce further, more intense protests. He also warned that if their demands continued to be ignored, the city could face paralysis.
The Dhaka City Corporation Employees Union expressed solidarity with the movement, warning that they would suspend all civic services if the demand for Ishraque’s appointment was not met. The protests underscore ongoing tensions over the mayoral appointment in Dhaka South.
