In a bizarre twist, a fraud case has emerged in Chhattisgarh involving funds intended for married women under a government welfare scheme, which were siphoned into a fake account opened in the name of Bollywood star Sunny Leone.
The scheme, initiated by the BJP government, grants ₹1,000 (approximately Dh45) monthly to married women in the state. Investigations have uncovered that Virendra Joshi, the alleged perpetrator, created and managed the fraudulent account to divert these funds.
This revelation has sparked a political firestorm. State Congress chief Deepak Baij has accused the BJP government of negligence, claiming that more than 50% of the beneficiaries listed under the scheme are fictitious. In response, Deputy Chief Minister Arun Sao dismissed these accusations, asserting that the Congress is only criticizing the program because it failed to implement similar support during its own tenure.
This incident exposes significant weaknesses in the oversight of welfare schemes and raises urgent questions about accountability among the authorities responsible for their implementation.
