Sudan Landslide Wipes Out Entire Village, Over 1,000 Dead

1 min read

A catastrophic landslide in Sudan’s remote Marra Mountains has obliterated an entire village, killing more than 1,000 people and leaving only one known survivor. The disaster struck on 31 August after days of relentless heavy rain triggered the collapse of the mountainside.

The village, located in the conflict-scarred Darfur region, was under the control of an armed group that has appealed urgently to the United Nations and international aid agencies for help in recovering the bodies of men, women, and children buried under the debris.

Access to the area is extremely difficult, with food and medical supplies already scarce. Many of the victims had fled to the mountains seeking safety from the prolonged fighting between Sudan’s army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. The civil war, now in its third year, has displaced more than half of Sudan’s population, forcing millions from their homes.
