Students Protest by Blocking Roads at New Market, Causing Disruptions for Commuters

2 min read

Students began their protest on Saturday morning at around 8:30 am by blocking the roads in the New Market area of the capital. The demonstration led to a complete halt in traffic on the main roads, causing severe congestion in the New Market, Gulshan, and Boshundhara connecting roads. Additionally, traffic on the road from Kuril Bishwa Road towards Badda was also suspended, creating significant difficulties for ordinary people and commuters heading to their workplaces.

The blockade has not only inconvenienced residents but has also affected emergency situations. To manage the situation, extra law enforcement personnel have been deployed to restore order.

The students stated that they are continuing their protest demanding the withdrawal of their illegal expulsion orders and action against the arbitrary authorities. Their main demand is for the immediate reversal of the expulsion orders issued by the top management of United International University (UIU) and for transparency in the university’s administrative affairs.

According to Officer-in-Charge Md. Rakibul Hasan of Vatara Police Station, “Students are protesting on the streets demanding the withdrawal of expulsion orders and transparency from the authorities.”

It is noteworthy that following protests by students on April 26 and 27 at the UIU campus, the Vice-Chancellor and 11 administrative officials resigned. Subsequently, on April 28, all academic activities at the university were indefinitely suspended. Although online classes resumed from May 20, many students continue their protests, demanding direct classes and transparency.
