Strengthening Ties: A Call for Closer UK-Gulf Cooperation

2 min read

In a pivotal gathering at the House of Lords on December 11, prominent business leaders, researchers, and politicians urged the United Kingdom to enhance its business and cultural connections with the Gulf states. This high-level discussion highlighted the evolving dynamics between the UK and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).

Dr. Mohammed Al-Ali, CEO of Trends Advisory, led an Emirati delegation that delved into pressing topics such as politics, counter-extremism, and security within the UAE and the broader Gulf region. The forum, moderated by security expert and former MP Lady Olga Maitland, featured insights from notable figures, including former UK defense minister Liam Fox, Syrian journalist Ghassan Ibrahim, and former Conservative MP Daniel Kawczynski.

Trade between the UK and the GCC is currently valued at approximately $78 billion, and discussions regarding a free trade agreement have been ongoing for several years. Fox emphasized the significance of this relationship, describing it as “one of the most important trading relationships.” He expressed optimism about the region’s potential, stating, “If we’ve ever had a chance to do something different, that’s where we are now.”

However, he cautioned that history is filled with missed opportunities, urging the need for decisive leadership to capitalize on the current moment. “We have a unique historic opportunity to help shape this part of the world,” he asserted.

Dr. Al-Ali praised the deep-rooted Anglophone culture in the UAE, which includes numerous British educational institutions that foster strong cultural ties. He proposed the establishment of a strategic council to advance the long-awaited UK-GCC free trade agreement.

Charlotte Leslie recognized the Gulf’s proficiency in uniting communities amid a polarized global landscape, suggesting that the UK could benefit from the Gulf’s experience in developing counter-extremism initiatives. Meanwhile, Kawczynski expressed enthusiasm over the increasing recognition among UK parliamentarians of Saudi Arabia’s significance, particularly following Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s recent visit.

He was particularly impressed by the substantial Emirati investments in London, underscoring the importance of fostering economic interdependence between the UK and the Gulf.

Ibrahim echoed these sentiments, describing Al-Ali’s visit as a testament to the robust and vital relationship between the UAE and the UK, as well as the broader GCC. As discussions continue, the potential for strengthened ties between these regions appears both promising and imperative.
