Stone by Stone, Accountability Returns to Volaganj

2 min read

In a dramatic turn of events, residents and traders in Volaganj, located in Sylhet’s Companiganj subdistrict, have begun returning large volumes of looted white stone following a firm ultimatum from local authorities. Hoping to avoid legal consequences, many have transported the materials back at their own expense using trucks and boats.

By Monday morning, several hundred thousand cubic feet of stone had been deposited at designated collection points. Officials confirmed that the returns began Saturday afternoon and continued through Sunday night, with individuals voluntarily delivering the stone.

Although the exact volume has yet to be measured, authorities described the quantity as substantial. The district administration had earlier issued a clear deadline, stating that anyone who returned the stone by 5 PM Tuesday would be exempt from prosecution. After that deadline, anyone found in possession of the stone would face legal action.

Officials also held meetings with local representatives, warning that failure to comply could result in consequences not only for individuals but also for those in leadership positions. Meanwhile, in a separate operation on Sunday, joint forces recovered an additional 60,000 cubic feet of stone.

The swift response from the community signals a growing awareness of accountability and the power of administrative pressure in protecting natural resources.
