Bangladesh’s first female Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia was widely known for her love of sports. The veteran political leader, who spent decades fighting for democracy and citizens’ rights, passed away this morning after a prolonged illness. Her death has prompted heartfelt condolences from across the country’s sporting community.

Former national football team captain Said Hasan Kanan shared several personal memories of Khaleda Zia. Speaking to Dhaka Post, he said, “When I was running for Daksu’s sports secretary as a Chhatra Dal candidate, Madam would often check on the election updates. One night while I was putting up posters on campus, she called out from behind and said, ‘Your photos came out nicely.’”

Despite her heavy political and state responsibilities, Khaleda Zia maintained a strong interest in sports throughout her life.
