Snowy Monaro councillor Andrew Thaler is set to be disqualified from holding civic office for five years after receiving a third consecutive suspension from local government.
The NSW Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure confirmed on Wednesday that Thaler had been handed a three-month ban over breaches of conduct. Department Secretary Kiersten Fishburn’s report cited “misconduct” linked to comments Thaler made publicly on social media and in videos between May 8 and August 30.
Under the Local Government Act 1993, any councillor who receives three suspension orders is automatically disqualified from office for five years. The report outlined 15 breaches of the Snowy Monaro Regional Council’s code of conduct, along with a breach of the Act itself.
The misconduct findings related to remarks Thaler made about current and former politicians, council staff, and members of the public. Some of the comments, the report noted, targeted “individuals’ physical appearance, sexual orientation, gender identity, or contain[ed] sexually suggestive remarks” and were “intended to offend.”
