Snowstorm Johannes Batters Scandinavia: Three Countries Disrupted, Three Dead in Sweden

1 min read

A powerful snowstorm named Johannes has swept across three Scandinavian countries Norway, Sweden, and Finland causing widespread disruption and claiming three lives in Sweden. The victims, aged between 50 and 60, included two people who died in road accidents while heading to work and another who was struck by a falling tree while collecting firewood in a forest.

The storm has severely damaged power infrastructure across all three countries. Millions of homes have been left without electricity amid freezing temperatures. According to Swedish news agency TT, more than 40,000 households in Sweden alone remain without power. Although winds weakened slightly on Sunday morning, weather conditions have not improved significantly, and the intense cold continues.

Since Johannes began on Friday, authorities in Norway, Sweden, and Finland have been forced to cancel hundreds of flights, trains, and ferry services. Norwegian broadcaster NRK reported that the worst damage occurred in Nordland, a northern province located close to the Arctic Circle.
