In a bold move to enhance military collaboration, South Korea and the United Arab Emirates are taking significant strides in their air force partnership. This commitment was solidified on Wednesday with the signing of pivotal agreements, including a focus on the development of Korea’s cutting-edge supersonic fighter jet.
Maj. Gen. Rashed Mohammed A. Al-Shamsi, commander of the UAE Air Force and Air Defense, arrived in Seoul on Monday for a four-day official visit. The visit culminated in a crucial agreement with South Korean Air Force Chief of Staff, aimed at establishing regular bilateral meetings between their air forces. A letter of intent was also signed to advance cooperation on the KF-21 Boramae fighter jet.
The KF-21, a 4.5-generation supersonic aircraft engineered by Korea Aerospace Industries, is set for deployment in 2026. Notably, an Emirati pilot took part in a test flight during Al-Shamsi’s visit, underscoring the commitment to training UAE personnel in operating this advanced aircraft.
“The South Korean Air Force regularly participates in exercises such as Desert Flag and IAMDOC in the UAE. We are eager to expand our cooperation and defense exchanges,” stated Gen. Lee after the meetings. He also reiterated Seoul’s dedication to supporting the UAE’s operations of the Cheongung II, a medium-range surface-to-air missile system acquired in 2022. “We will implement training programs to ensure Emirati air defense personnel are well-prepared to operate this system,” he affirmed.
This initiative to hold regular meetings marks a historic first for South Korea, establishing direct air force dialogue with a Middle Eastern nation. The groundwork for this collaboration was laid during Gen. Lee’s visit to Abu Dhabi in March, where both sides recognized the urgency for closer military coordination. Under the new framework, the two nations will convene every six months, paving the way for a robust defense partnership that promises to strengthen regional security.
