A ski lift accident at the Astún resort in the Pyrenees has resulted in at least 30 injuries, with emergency services in Spain’s Aragon region confirming that 10 individuals required hospitalization, including two in serious condition. The incident occurred Saturday, prompting a swift response from local authorities.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene, suggesting that a cable malfunction caused the chairs to bounce, leading to several skiers being thrown off. “It’s like a cable has come off,” one witness recounted to state TV channel TVE. Initially, around 80 people were reported trapped on the chairlifts in the aftermath of the accident.

Fernando Beltrán, a government representative in Aragon, later announced on social media that all skiers affected had been evacuated and were receiving medical attention. The exact cause of the incident remains under investigation.

In response to the crisis, several helicopters were deployed to assist with the rescue operations and transport the injured to nearby hospitals. Disturbing images and videos circulating on social media depicted several individuals lying on the snow beneath the ski lift.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed his shock over the event, extending his thoughts to the injured and their families. The ski resort has stated that it is collaborating with emergency services and expressed profound concern for all those impacted by the incident.
