Six Journalists Killed in Gaza Airstrike, Global Outcry Over Press Safety

2 min read

Grief swept through Gaza on Monday as six journalists were laid to rest following a deadly Israeli airstrike near Al-Shifa Hospital. The attack, which occurred on Sunday during active news coverage, claimed the lives of five staff members from a prominent international news outlet and one freelance reporter.

Among the victims were reporters Anas Al Sharif and Mohammad Quraikeh, along with cameramen Ibrahim Zaher, Mohammad Nufal, and Moamen Aliwa. Freelance journalist Mohammad Al Khalidi was also killed in the same strike. All six were buried together in Gaza City, where hundreds gathered amid the ruins of bombed-out buildings to pay their final respects.

The funeral procession began after midday prayers in the courtyard of Al-Shifa Hospital. Mourners carried the bodies wrapped in white shrouds through narrow alleys to their graves, many wearing blue press vests in a silent tribute to their fallen colleagues.

The incident has sparked global condemnation, with press freedom organizations denouncing the attack as a direct assault on journalism. Advocates for media safety warned that targeting reporters in conflict zones undermines the very foundation of free and independent reporting.

As Gaza continues to endure relentless military operations, the deaths of these journalists have added a new layer of sorrow to a region already overwhelmed by loss. Their final assignment, cut short by violence, now stands as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by those who risk everything to tell the world what’s happening.
