Renowned actress Shomi Kaiser has been granted bail in a high-profile attempted murder case stemming from a violent incident during an anti-discrimination protest. The bail was approved by a dual bench of the High Court, marking a significant development in a legal saga that has drawn public attention.
The case originated from an alleged attack on Zubayer Hasan Yusuf, an honors-level student at Tongi Government College, which took place in Uttara on April 9. Following the incident, a warrant for Kaiser’s arrest was issued by the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court in Dhaka.
Earlier, she had secured bail from a lower court in connection with the same case filed at Uttara East Police Station. However, as the investigation progressed, the prosecution sought to suspend the bail, citing concerns over the integrity of the judicial process.
On November 5 of the previous year, law enforcement detained Kaiser from her residence in Uttara’s Sector 4. After her bail plea was rejected by the lower court, she appealed to the High Court, which issued an interim bail order and a rule on December 10. The prosecution responded by filing for a stay on the bail, prompting the Appellate Division’s chamber court to temporarily suspend the order and refer the matter to a regular bench for hearing.
The legal proceedings continued over the following months, with the Appellate Division ultimately upholding the suspension and directing the High Court to resolve the rule within a specified timeframe. After a final hearing, the High Court delivered its verdict, granting Shomi Kaiser bail.
This decision brings temporary relief to the actress, though the case remains active as further legal steps are expected.
