Shnaider Strikes Gold Again in Monterrey Thriller

1 min read

Russian tennis star Diana Shnaider extended her flawless run in WTA finals with a gritty three-set victory over compatriot Ekaterina Alexandrova at the Monterrey Open on Saturday, clinching the title 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in a match that swayed like a pendulum.

Shnaider, seeded third, opened with confidence, breezing through the first set. But the second turned into a tug-of-war, with Alexandrova snatching the decisive break at 5-4 to force a final set. The momentum seemed to shift, but Shnaider responded with poise and precision, breaking in the opening game of the third and never letting go of her lead.

Now ranked world No. 12, Shnaider has won five consecutive WTA finals, adding Monterrey to her growing list of titles from Hong Kong, Budapest, Bad Homburg, and Hua Hin. The win also evens her head-to-head record with Alexandrova, who had to recover quickly from a rain-delayed semifinal earlier that same day.

With little time to celebrate, both players now head to New York for the US Open. Shnaider will face Germany’s Laura Siegemund, while Alexandrova takes on Latvia’s Anastasija Sevastova each hoping to carry momentum into the season’s final Grand Slam.
