In the ever-evolving theater of war, the eastern Donetsk region has become a focal point of fierce conflict, as Russian forces recently announced their control over two key settlements. According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the village of Zelene Pole has fallen under their command, strategically positioned between Pokrovsk—a hotbed of Russian offensives—and Velyuka Novosilka, which the Russian military reportedly captured last month.
Additionally, the village of Dachne, located to the west of Kurakhove, has also been claimed by Russian forces, following weeks of intense fighting. This capture emphasizes the ongoing struggle for dominance in this contested area, as both sides grapple for control.
Despite these assertions from Moscow, the Ukrainian General Staff reported a different narrative, stating that both villages were among 11 settlements targeted by Russian attacks, but they refrained from confirming their capture. Meanwhile, independent verification of battlefield claims remains elusive, with sources like Ukraine’s DeepState military blog noting Russian advances near the contested villages.
Since the onset of the conflict in February 2022, Russian ambitions to seize Kyiv faltered, leading to a concentrated effort on controlling the Donbas region, which encompasses Donetsk and Luhansk. Over recent months, Russian forces have steadily gained ground, capturing a series of villages and altering the landscape of conflict.
Yet, amid these developments, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky highlighted the “good success” of a regiment operating near Pokrovsk, hinting at the resilience of Ukrainian forces without divulging specific details. The situation remains fluid, with reports of Ukrainian counterattacks surfacing from various observers, underscoring the unpredictable nature of this ongoing battle
