Islami Chhatra Shibir has secured a commanding win in the 38th Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) elections, claiming 23 of the 28 central posts in a decisive show of strength.
The group captured the vice president position, 11 of the 14 secretary roles, and 11 of the 13 membership seats. Independent candidates took the remaining three secretary posts and one membership seat, while another membership position went to Hema Chakma of the leftist alliance “Pratirodh Parshad.”
The elections, held on Tuesday, also decided 13 posts in each of the university’s 18 student dormitories.
Shibir’s Publication Secretary, Abu Shadik Kayem, won the vice president post with a resounding 60% margin over his nearest rival, Chhatra Dal’s Abidul Islam Khan. His prominent role in last year’s anti-fascist movement is believed to have boosted his popularity among voters.
In other top results, Shibir’s Dhaka University unit president SM Farhad was elected general secretary, while Mohiuddin Khan secured the assistant general secretary post both by similarly wide margins. Chhatra Dal candidates finished as second runners-up in all three of these key positions.
The winning panel reflected Shibir’s emphasis on diversity, with two women elected to secretary posts, three women to membership roles, and ethnic minority representative Sarva Mitra Chakma also securing a membership seat.
In a unique outcome, a married couple from the English department will now serve together in DUCSU. Umme Salma won the reading room and cafeteria secretary post, while her husband, Raihan Uddin, claimed a membership position.
The results mark one of Shibir’s most dominant performances in recent DUCSU history, reshaping the student political landscape at Dhaka University.
