Over a hundred villages in the Sherpur district have seen flooding due to two days of continuous rain and the overflow of waters from the Indian hills, which has also caused several fissures in river protection dams.

At least 1,500 individuals have been left isolated owing to the floodwaters.

At three locations along the Bhogai River in Nalitabari Upazila, the water level was at least 100 centimetres above the danger limit on Friday. In Jhinaigati Upazila, another river was flowing noticeably above the acceptable level.

In the 24 hours till Friday morning, 225-milimetre rainfall was recorded in the district, according to an official of the local Water Development Board unit.

Cracks have also erupted in parts of a river protection dam due to the rains, the official told reporters.
