Just a day before the highly anticipated kickoff concert for World Pride 2025 in the capital, headlining artist Shakira has unexpectedly pulled out due to equipment issues. The Capital Pride Alliance, the main organizer of the event, expressed their disappointment in a Friday statement, citing “unforeseen circumstances” that forced the cancellation. They promised to provide updates regarding a relocated opening ceremony as soon as arrangements are finalized.
The Colombian superstar was set to headline the opening celebrations Saturday night at Nationals Park, marking a highlight of the Pride festivities. However, the cancellation appears linked to ongoing equipment problems stemming from her Thursday night concert in Boston’s Fenway Park, which was also called off just hours before showtime. Meanwhile, a Friday night concert featuring country singer Jason Aldean at Fenway was similarly canceled.
The disruptions come amidst broader concerns surrounding LGBTQ+ events in the U.S. during this politically charged climate. International organizations such as Eagle Canada and the African Human Rights Coalition have issued travel warnings, cautioning against visiting due to fears that strict gender enforcement at passport controls could lead to harassment or denial of entry for transgender and nonbinary individuals.
Some international participants have already opted to skip this year’s Pride events, citing fears of harassment or as a form of protest against recent policies. Nevertheless, organizers are calling for a strong domestic turnout, with plans to bolster security by installing fencing around the final two days of concerts and rallies along Pennsylvania Avenue.
Early hotel reservations for the Pride weekend, scheduled for June 6 to 8, initially lagged behind previous years. However, Destination D.C. President Elliott Ferguson noted a recent surge in bookings, attributing it to a renewed motivation among the domestic and national communities to gather and celebrate. Ferguson added that concerns over international attendance may have galvanized local residents and supporters to show up in greater numbers, ensuring that Pride remains a vibrant and resilient event despite recent setbacks.
