Renowned photographer and human rights activist Shahidul Alam has returned to Bangladesh after being detained in Israel during the Global Sumud Flotilla mission. His flight landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka at 4:55 a.m. on Saturday, October 11, where he was warmly received by family members and colleagues with flowers.
Alam exited the airport’s VIP lounge shortly after 5 a.m. and spoke briefly with journalists. Reflecting on his experience, he said, “The people of Gaza are still under attack. The oppression continues. Our work will not be complete until that ends.” He also expressed deep gratitude to Bangladeshis worldwide, acknowledging their support, prayers, and solidarity during his detention.
His journey home included a stopover in Istanbul on Friday afternoon, where he was welcomed by Mohammad Mizanur Rahman, Bangladesh’s Consul General. Later that evening, at 6:45 p.m. local time, Alam departed Istanbul on a Turkish Airlines flight and arrived in Dhaka early the next morning.
The return of Shahidul Alam has been met with relief and celebration among his supporters, who view his release as a significant moment in ongoing efforts to highlight the plight of Palestinians and advocate for human rights.
