Jewelry businesses today find themselves enveloped in a climate of fear. These entrepreneurs, who chase golden dreams, feel ensnared by criminal threats. Recently, their concerns have reached a breaking point, as insecurity, theft, and robbery haunt them like a nightmarish specter.
According to a press release from the Bangladesh Jewelers Association (BAJUS), there have been 17 incidents of theft and robbery at jewelry establishments across the country in the past eight months, resulting in losses totaling nearly 400 million BDT. A pervasive sense of anxiety looms over jewelers. BAJUS’s acting president, Guljar Ahmed, expressed, “We are being targeted repeatedly. We are suffering from insecurity.”
Meanwhile, BAJUS General Secretary Badal Chandra Roy has urged the government to focus on ensuring safety for the industry. He has called for the return of licensed firearms. Statistics reveal that in just three months of the new year, there have already been 11 reported robberies. Notably, on January 3, a significant theft occurred at Crown Diamond and Jewelers in the Shimantoshomvar Market, where 159 vori of gold ornaments were stolen.
In this climate of insecurity, jewelers are appealing to the government for support, hoping for swift and effective measures to protect their industry. However, the pressing question remains: when will this darkness end? Will the path to golden dreams shine brightly once again? The resilience of this industry in the face of time’s trials is yet to be seen.
