Severe Flooding Strikes Sylhet Region Due to Heavy Rains and Mountain Waters

1 min read

Heavy rains and the relentless flow of hilly waters from upstream have caused widespread flooding in several low-lying areas of Sylhet, including Gowainghat, Companiganj, and Kanaighat. The deluge has submerged roads and highways, disrupting communication links with other parts of Bangladesh, according to local reports.

Since Saturday morning, persistent rainfall has severely impacted the daily lives of residents, turning streets into waterways and hampering transportation and daily activities across the affected regions. The floodwaters have displaced communities and created a challenging situation for both residents and emergency responders.

The heavy downpour isn’t limited to Bangladesh; neighboring India’s Cherrapunji, known for its intense rainfall, has also experienced significant precipitation. Mountain streams originating from the region have flooded low-lying areas across the greater Sylhet division, intensifying the flood crisis.

Local authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, and residents are urged to stay alert and take necessary precautions as the floodwaters threaten to worsen with ongoing rains. The region remains on high alert for further disruptions and potential evacuations if the situation deteriorates.
