A storm is brewing in the political arena as serious allegations surface against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy. The duo has reportedly caught the attention of the FBI amid claims of financial irregularities and money laundering, sparking intense debate in the global political landscape.
According to sources, an FBI representative in London has confirmed the investigation. Linda Samuels, a lawyer from the U.S. Department of Justice, reached out to Special Agent La Privot, revealing that $300 million has been transferred from Bangladesh to various bank accounts. On September 9, the FBI met with officials from the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) of Bangladesh, handing over a substantial amount of documentation.
On October 1, discussions took place between the ACC chairperson and a European delegation regarding technical support for recovering the embezzled funds. The ACC has already initiated an inquiry into the allegations of $300 million in money laundering against Sheikh Hasina and Sajeeb Wazed Joy.
On December 17, ACC Director General Md. Akhtar Hossain disclosed that allegations have arisen against Hasina, Joy, and other family members for misappropriating $7 billion from nine development projects, with evidence suggesting that $5 billion was siphoned off from the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant project alone.
Experts indicate that the name of Tulip Siddiq, a relative of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has also emerged in the investigation. After 15 years in power, Hasina fled to India after resigning, marking the beginning of a corruption probe.
Sajeeb Wazed Joy has faced allegations in a 2014 case in the U.S., where an FBI investigation uncovered serious financial misconduct. Evidence has surfaced showing money transfers through bank accounts in Hong Kong and the Cayman Islands.
ACC Chairman Muhammad Abdul Momen stated, “Most of these events are true. We are working to gather more information.” A recently published white paper indicated that under the Awami League’s rule from 2009 to 2023, Bangladesh has faced a staggering loss of $16 billion.
Now, the pressing questions remain: What will be the outcome of this investigation, and how will it impact the political landscape of Bangladesh? The answers to these questions are yet to unfold, leaving many on edge.
