Senior lawyer and former assistant secretary general of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Barrister Abdur Razzaq, has died at Ibn Sina Hospital in Dhaka on Sunday afternoon. He was 74 years old.

Razzaq, who also served as the chief defence counsel at the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), passed away while undergoing treatment. His death was confirmed by SC lawyer Shishir Monir via his verified Facebook account, stating that Razzaq breathed his last at 4:10 pm.

He also played a significant role as the chief adviser of the AB Party. The first funeral prayer is scheduled to be held at Dhanmondi’s Taqwa Mosque after Esha prayers on Sunday. The second funeral prayer will take place on the Supreme Court premises at 11 am on Monday.

Razzaq, who held British citizenship, had left Bangladesh for London in 2013 following the filing of two explosive-related cases against him during the regime of the Awami League government. After 11 years abroad, he returned to Bangladesh in December last year.

Diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2020, Razzaq’s health declined further, leading to his admission to a London hospital in September 2024. During that period, he resigned from his post as chief adviser of the AB Party.

His death marks the loss of a prominent legal figure who played a crucial role in some of the country’s most high-profile cases.
