Second Australian dies from suspected alcohol poisoning in Laos

A second young Australian tourist has died after apparently consuming tainted alcohol while vacationing in Laos, according to Canberra’s foreign minister.

Penny Wong expressed her condolences, stating, “All Australians will be heartbroken by the tragic passing of Holly Bowles. Just yesterday, Holly lost her best friend, Bianca Jones.”

This incident brings the total number of foreign tourists who have died from suspected methanol poisoning in northern Laos to six, including individuals from Australia, Britain, Denmark, and the United States. Many of the victims were in their teens or early twenties and fell ill after a night out in Vang Vieng.

Australian officials are urging Laotian authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding these deaths. Methanol, a toxic alcohol found in various industrial and household products, is suspected to be the cause. Despite its dangers, it is sometimes used in poorly made home brews.
