Authorities have regrettably suspended the search for 77-year-old sailor Maurice Saunderson, who has been missing since embarking on a solo voyage from Emu Point Marina in Albany on December 29, 2024.
Mr. Saunderson set out with plans to sail approximately 200 kilometers south to Busselton, a journey that typically takes between four to seven days depending on the wind conditions. However, he has not been seen or heard from since his departure.
Acting Sergeant Mark Shortland of WA Water Police confirmed that Saunderson, a retiree who lives aboard his yacht, had previously completed the same journey solo. Concerns were raised when family and friends reported that he had not arrived at his destination by Friday.
In response, WA Police coordinated a comprehensive search effort involving sea, air, and land resources to locate Mr. Saunderson and his vessel. The search spanned a vast area of coastline from Bunbury to Walpole, with local police and SES volunteers combing beaches and bays in hopes of finding any trace of him.
Despite their extensive efforts, no clues have emerged regarding Mr. Saunderson’s whereabouts. On Sunday, WA Police announced the suspension of the search, pending any new information.
“We don’t know if anything has happened to Mr. Saunderson, or if he is still traveling independently and has not made contact,” Acting Sergeant Shortland stated, leaving the community in a state of uncertainty.
