The search for Gach Top, the 26-year-old man missing in Alice Springs, has been officially suspended after five days of extensive efforts. Authorities, including police and the State Emergency Service (SES), sought advice from local trail guides and family friends before making the decision.
Gach Top went missing on Monday, with his vehicle found abandoned 14.5 kilometers west of John Flynn’s Grave Historical Reserve. Police described him as a tall man of Sudanese appearance, approximately six feet tall, with a lean build, short curly hair, and a distinctive presence.
NT Police Acting Sergeant Christopher Grotherr stated that the initial helicopter searches were scaled back on Saturday in favor of drone operations. Despite this shift, the number of on-ground personnel remained steady until 6 pm that evening, combing the rugged terrain for any clues.
Throughout the search, Mr Top’s family was kept informed of developments and has now been notified of the suspension of the operation.
In a statement, NT Police said, “Extensive search efforts, coordinated by the NT Police Force’s Search and Rescue Section, were suspended late this afternoon following a fifth day of searching an area about 21 kilometers west of Alice Springs.”
At the height of the operation, more than 50 personnel from NT Police, NT Emergency Services, NT Fire and Rescue Service, and Parks and Wildlife NT participated in the search. The authorities expressed their ongoing concern and appreciation for the community’s support during the effort.
