Former deputy Liberal leader and ex‑tennis star Sam Groth is set to resign from the Victorian Parliament within days, a move that will force a by‑election in the key seat of Nepean on the Mornington Peninsula.
Opposition Leader Jess Wilson’s office confirmed his impending departure on Wednesday afternoon, ending weeks of speculation about Groth’s political future. The former world‑record‑holding tennis player had already announced he would not recontest the November election.
Groth has recently criticised colleagues for what he described as internal undermining during his time as deputy leader. He has also accused members of his own party of leaking details to the Herald Sun about the early stages of his relationship with his now‑wife claims that deepened tensions within the Liberal ranks.
His resignation sets the stage for a closely watched by‑election in a seat considered crucial for the party’s prospects, adding fresh political turbulence at a time when the opposition is already grappling with internal divisions.
