SafeWork NSW to Boost Enforcement Amid $128 Million Budget Increase

1 min read

Following a significant $128 million funding boost this year, SafeWork NSW is ramping up efforts to enforce workplace safety laws across the state. The increased budget will fund the hiring of 50 new inspectors, including 25 dedicated to addressing psychological hazards.

SafeWork NSW’s executive director, Petrina Casey, explained that more resources will allow the regulator to hold more employers accountable. Current data indicates that one person a week dies from workplace-related injuries in New South Wales, highlighting the importance of stronger enforcement.

“With additional resources, we can pursue more prosecutions and ensure safer workplaces,” Ms. Casey said. Currently, there are 370 inspectors patrolling workplaces statewide, including building sites, with powers to seize evidence, order work to stop on dangerous sites, and issue on-the-spot fines for safety violations.

Among the new roles, 25 will focus specifically on psychological hazards, as the government faces pressure over proposed cuts to compensation for mental injuries. The move signals a commitment to improving safety standards and addressing emerging risks in the workplace.
